Count words in many files at once
Drop in Word documents (.docx), PDFs, OpenDocument text (.odt), plain text, Markdown or HTML files, one or dozens. Each file is opened and counted inside your browser: nothing is uploaded, which matters for contracts, manuscripts and client material under NDA.
For every file you get words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences and an estimated page count, plus totals across all files. Set a rate per word to turn the totals into a quote, which is how most translators, editors and copywriters price their work. You can download the table as CSV for your invoice or spreadsheet.
How each format is read
- DOCX: the document body is read directly from the file, including tables. Headers, footers, comments and tracked deletions are excluded, the same way Word’s main count excludes them by default.
- PDF: text is extracted with Mozilla’s PDF.js. Scanned PDFs contain images rather than text and will show zero words, they need OCR first.
- HTML: tags, scripts and styles are removed before counting.
- ODT, TXT and Markdown: read as text.
Limits
Files up to 50 MB each are supported. Very large PDFs can take a few seconds per hundred pages on older phones.
Questions
Are my documents uploaded?
No. Files are read with JavaScript in your browser and never leave your device.
Can it count words in a scanned PDF?
Not directly. A scanned PDF stores pictures of pages, so there is no text to count. Run it through OCR first, then count the result.
Does it include headers and footnotes?
For DOCX files it counts the main body and tables, but not headers, footers, footnotes or comments. PDFs include whatever text is on the page.
