Characters the way readers see them
A “character” sounds simple until emoji and accents arrive. The family emoji 👨👩👧 is five Unicode code points joined together and takes eight units in JavaScript, yet a reader sees one symbol. An “é” can be stored as one code point or as “e” plus a combining accent. Textkiln’s main count uses extended grapheme clusters (the Unicode definition of a user-perceived character) so each of those counts as one.
The Under the hood panel shows the other ways software measures length:
- Code points: what Python’s
len()returns. - UTF-16 units: what JavaScript’s
.length, Java and many form fields count. Emoji outside the Basic Multilingual Plane take two. - UTF-8 bytes: what databases and APIs often limit. Accented Latin letters take 2 bytes, most Asian characters 3, emoji 4.
Limits you probably care about
The bars compare your text with common limits. Note that platforms do not all count the same way: X (Twitter) weights each emoji and each CJK character as two and every link as 23, so its bar uses that weighting. For a full breakdown by platform, use the Social Media Character Counter.
Search results are cut by pixel width, not characters, so a title full of “W”s truncates sooner than one full of “i”s. The SERP Snippet Preview measures that.
Counting with and without spaces
“Without spaces” removes every kind of whitespace, including tabs, line breaks and the no-break space. Some translation agencies and academic offices quote “characters without spaces”; publishers more often use characters with spaces.

Questions
Do emoji count as one character?
In the main count, yes: every emoji counts as one character, including combined ones like flags and families. Some platforms (X, for example) weight emoji as two, and developer tools may report 2–8 units per emoji.
Are spaces counted as characters?
Yes, in the main count. The “Without spaces” figure excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks.
How many characters fit in a meta description?
Roughly 150–160 characters on desktop, but Google truncates by pixel width (about 920 pixels). The SERP Snippet Preview shows exactly where your text would be cut.
