Spelling only, without the noise
Sometimes you want typos found and nothing else (no style advice, no rewording). This spell checker uses the same open-source Harper engine as our grammar checker but shows only spelling and typo suggestions. It runs entirely in your browser, so private documents stay private.
Dialects and your own words
Choose American, British, Canadian, Australian or Indian English. “Colour”, “organise” and “centre” are correct in British English and flagged in American, and the reverse.
Names, brands, jargon and technical terms often aren’t in any dictionary. Click Add to dictionary on a flagged word and it’s accepted from then on. Your personal dictionary is stored only in this browser; clear it at any time.
Tips for catching what spell checkers miss
A spell checker can only tell you whether a word exists, not whether it’s the right word. “Their” for “there” or “form” for “from” passes every spell check. After fixing the red flags:
- run the Confused Words Checker for homophones like its/it’s and affect/effect;
- read the text backwards, sentence by sentence, to break the habit of reading what you meant;
- check numbers, names and dates separately (they are the costliest typos).
Questions
Does it work for British spelling?
Yes. Pick British, Canadian, Australian or Indian English to accept those spellings.
Can I add words to the dictionary?
Yes. Use “Add to dictionary” on any flagged word. The list is saved in your browser only.
Does it check grammar too?
This page shows spelling only. The Grammar Checker uses the same engine and shows grammar, punctuation and style suggestions as well.
