Numbers spelled out correctly

Put one number per line in any common form (42, 1,234.56, 1000000, -7.5) and pick a format:

Format 1,234.56 becomes
Words one thousand two hundred thirty-four point five six
Cheque One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars
Currency one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents
Ordinal (whole numbers) 21 → twenty-first
Year 1999 → nineteen ninety-nine; 2005 → two thousand five; 2010 → twenty ten
Digit by digit one two three four point five six

Hyphens are used for compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, as standard English style requires. British “and” gives “one hundred and five” and “one thousand and five”. Change the currency word to pounds, euros or anything else; set the minor unit to pence or centimes.

Very large numbers use the short scale (million, billion, trillion…) up to vigintillion, 66 digits.

Writing cheques

On a cheque, write the amount in words starting at the far left, with the cents as a fraction over 100, and draw a line through the remaining space so nothing can be added. The cheque format here follows that convention.

Worked example

Here is what the Number to Words Converter returns for its built-in example. Settings used: Format: Words (one hundred five); British “and” (one hundred and five): off; Capitalise: off. Click Try an example in the tool above to load it, then change it as you like.
