What sentence case means
Sentence case capitalises only what a normal sentence would: the first word, the pronoun “I”, and proper nouns. It’s the standard for body text and, increasingly, for headings (style guides from GOV.UK, Google, Microsoft and many newsrooms prefer sentence-case headings because they’re easier to scan).
How this converter decides what stays capitalised
- The first word of every sentence and every line is capitalised.
- “I”, “I’m”, “I’ll”, “I’ve” and “I’d” are capitalised.
- Acronyms (NASA, PDF, EU) and mixed-case names (iPhone, YouTube) are kept, unless a whole sentence is shouted in capitals, in which case it can’t tell them apart and lowercases everything.
- Anything you type into Always capitalise is restored exactly as you write it: names, places, product names.
Sentence boundaries are detected after full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, ellipses and line breaks.
Converting headings to APA sentence case
APA 7 uses sentence case for the titles of articles, books and web pages in reference lists. Paste your titles one per line, add the proper nouns they contain to Always capitalise, and you’re done (the word after a colon is capitalised automatically by the Citation Generator if you need full references).
Worked example
Here is what the Sentence Case Converter returns for its built-in example. Settings used: Keep acronyms (NASA, iPhone): on. Click Try an example in the tool above to load it, then change it as you like.

How do I convert ALL CAPS text to normal text?
Paste it here. Each sentence is lowercased and its first letter capitalised. Add names to “Always capitalise” to restore them.
Does sentence case capitalize proper nouns?
Proper nouns cannot be detected reliably, so list the ones in your text in “Always capitalise”. Acronyms and mixed-case brand names are kept automatically.
