Replace across a whole document

Type what to find and what to replace it with; every match is replaced as you type, and the count appears under the result.

  • Ignore case matches “Colour”, “colour” and “COLOUR”.
  • Whole words matches “cat” but not “category”.
  • Regular expression lets you use patterns. Capture groups work in the replacement: find (\w+)@(\w+)\.com and replace with $2: $1. $& inserts the whole match and $<name> a named group.

Many rules at once

Add more rules in the box below, one per line in the form find => replace. They’re applied in order after the main rule, which makes this a quick batch editor for house-style fixes, glossary updates or renaming variables:

colour => color
e-mail => email
Acme Ltd => Acme Limited

Each rule’s match count is shown separately. Test complex patterns in the Regex Tester first (it shows every match and capture group).

Worked example

Here is what the Find and Replace returns for its built-in example. Settings used: Ignore case: on; Whole words: off; Regular expression: off. Click Try an example in the tool above to load it, then change it as you like.

Questions

How do I replace multiple words at once?

Add extra rules in the “More rules” box, one per line, written as “find => replace”. They are applied in order.

Can I use $1 in the replacement?

Yes, in regular expression mode. $1, $2… insert capture groups and $& inserts the whole match.
