The short version
The text you type, paste or open in Textkiln is processed on your device, in your browser. It is not sent to our servers or to anyone else.
Your text and files
- Text and files are read and processed with JavaScript running in your browser.
- Files you open (DOCX, PDF, ODT, TXT, HTML) are read locally and never uploaded.
- The grammar engine runs in a Web Worker inside your browser. Downloading the engine is an ordinary file download; your text is not part of that request.
Local storage on your device
To make the tools convenient, your browser stores some data locally:
- your most recent text (the “draft”), so it survives a refresh and moves between tools;
- documents you create in the Writing Editor, writing-sprint history and your personal spelling dictionary;
- tool settings and your colour theme.
This data stays in your browser’s local storage on your device. We cannot see it. You can remove it with each tool’s Clear button, by deleting documents in the Desk, or by clearing site data in your browser settings.
Offline support
Textkiln registers a service worker that caches the site’s own pages and files so tools load quickly and work offline. It does not cache what you write.
Server logs
Like any website, our hosting provider may record standard request information (IP address, browser type, the page requested, time) for security and reliability. These logs never contain your text.
Analytics and advertising
We use optional Google Analytics 4 only after you choose Allow analytics. Choose No thanks to keep analytics off; all tools remain available. Your choice is stored locally. Use Analytics preferences at any time to change it or withdraw consent. Withdrawal disables analytics and removes accessible Google Analytics cookies.
When enabled, Google Analytics receives page visits and standard technical information. We send the page address without query parameters or fragments and an empty referrer. We do not send your writing, opened files, tool inputs or outputs. Google signals, advertising personalization and automatic enhanced measurement are disabled. Google Analytics may set first-party cookies such as _ga and ga* to distinguish visits. See Google's privacy policy for how Google handles data.
No advertising tags are installed.
Children
Textkiln is a general-audience site. The tools do not request personal information from children; optional analytics is described above.
Changes
We will update this page if our practices change, and note the date at the top.
