Diacritics removed safely

Accented letters cause trouble in URLs, file names, old databases, usernames and search systems that only accept ASCII. This tool converts them to their base letters: é → e, ñ → n, ü → u, å → a, ç → c.

Some letters aren’t “letter + accent” in Unicode, so a plain normalisation leaves them untouched. With Convert ß æ ø ł đ þ on, they are spelled out the conventional way: ß → ss, æ → ae, œ → oe, ø → o, ł → l, đ → d, þ → th.

Why other scripts are protected

A careless accent remover decomposes every character and deletes every combining mark, which destroys Hindi, Bengali, Thai, Arabic and Hebrew text, where combining marks are vowels, not decorations. Textkiln only strips marks from Latin letters (and Greek, if enabled). Everything else is left exactly as it was.

Cyrillic is off by default because й and ё are distinct letters in Russian, not accented versions of и and е. Turn it on only when you deliberately want that simplification. To convert Cyrillic or Greek into Latin letters, use the Transliteration Tool; for web addresses, the URL Slug Generator does both steps for you.

Worked example

Here is what the Remove Accents returns for its built-in example. Settings used: Convert ß æ ø ł đ þ: on; Greek accents: on; Cyrillic (й → и, ё → е): off. Click Try an example in the tool above to load it, then change it as you like.

Questions

How do I remove accents from letters?

Paste your text; é becomes e, ñ becomes n, and so on. Special letters like ß and ø are spelled out (ss, o).

Will it break text in other languages?

No. Only Latin (and optionally Greek and Cyrillic) letters are changed. Devanagari, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and other scripts are left intact.
